Alfred Edmeades Bestall (1892-1986),born Mandalay,Burma,the son of a Methodist minister. Studied art on a scholarship at the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts,and afterwards at the Central School of Arts and Crafts,London.After serving in Flanders during WW1 (1915-19),he worked in Fleet Street,contributing humorous illustrations to 'Punch', 'The Tatler', 'The Bystander','Passing Show' and various lesser magazines. In 1936 he took over the Daily Express series of Rupert Bear strips (created by Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the paper on 8th November, 1920.) from her and by the time he retired from morning paper work in 1965,he had produced over 270 Rupert adventures.He continued to draw for the 'Rupert' annuals until 1973.
